Gilles Peterson’s Final Show on BBC Radio 1

Tonight it was Gilles’ final show on Radio 1, with a studio full of friends and family! With clips from 2001’s NERD interview, a brand new Tigran Hamasyan and LV Maida Vale collaboration, a classic Raphael Saadiq session track and a crateful of classic tunes, Gilles went out in style, chatting to various producers he worked with on the station as they chose their favourite tracks of their time. Next stop, 3pm, April 7th, on 6Music.

The man behind the amazing Dwele, Floating Points, and Raphael Saadiq studio sessions recordings.  My personal, trusted source for musical discovery before Shazam and The-Breaks.com even existed.  A personal personality (although broadcasting 1/2 a world away) bestowing good-natured humor and musical mastery in “joining the musical dots - soul, hip-hop, house, Afro, Latin, dubstep, jazz and beyond.”
Every Brownswood Podcast, Radio 1 broadcast and Brownswood Bubbler compilation has been a gift, a treasure, and a pocket full of good memories.  It’s hard to find someone you can admire so much for having such an uncanny knack at choosing just the right record at just the right time.. But Gilles always seemed to figure it out.
My most favorite recent “Ahhh” moments on Gilles’ show have to be these three:  the Raphael Saadiq extended “The Answer” Maide Vale studio session recording; the debut of Robert Glasper Experiment’s “Move Love” featuring KING months ago, last year; and when Peterson dropped the Jack Sparrow remix of Submotion Orchestra’s “All Yours.”  Every moment was absolute #MADNESS.  Definitely the good kind, unlike the bad kind I’m having with these temporary GP withdrawls.
Gilles Peterson, thank you not just for all these #spectacular memories that I could spread over a couple of lifetimes to treasure, but thank you for making the world conscious of what an amazing period of soul, dance and soundsystem music we’re in, right now.  What a musical journey you’ve led all of us!
Farewell!  & #CHEERS to the mothafuckin’ 6Music Saturday show! YEEEEE!!!
